Oceania Pacific Cities Unite in Climate Covenant for Regional Resilience

The Pacific Ocean, embracing the islands of Oceania, confronts a pressing crisis in the face of relentless climate change. Positioned among the world's most vulnerable regions, Oceania bears the brunt of its geographical challenges, economic limitations, and readiness constraints. Rising sea levels threaten coastal communities, particularly those on low-lying islands, while freshwater resources dwindle. In response to these pressing issues, nine cities across the Oceania Pacific region have taken a momentous stride by collaborating with global counterparts through the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM). Their mission: to lead a localized response to protect their people's well-being and secure the future of their region.

In a remarkable milestone for the Oceania region, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) has grown to 50 signatories, a testament to the commitment of cities to combat this existential threat. Central to this achievement has been the team at ICLEI Oceania who provides technical assistance, capacity building, advocacy and policy support to foster collaboration among cities and local authorities against climate change.

These nine forward-thinking cities, encompassing Suva, Lautoka, Labasa, and Savusavu in Fiji; Honiara and Tulagi in the Solomon Islands; Betio and Teinainano in Kiribati; and Puna’auia in Tahiti, are part of the 50 signatories in the Oceania region who are all developing Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans tailored to their unique circumstances. These plans serve as their guide to predict and proactively address the adverse effects of climate change, contributing to global efforts to mitigate its impact.

Pedro Velazquez Hernandez, Acting Head of Cooperation, warmly welcomed the Pacific mayors to a climate project workshop, emphasizing that "Climate planning at the local level is not just a responsibility; it's an opportunity to shape the future." The Global Covenant of Mayors, with its technical expertise, stands prepared to assist these cities in identifying climate-related risks specific to their regions, encompassing challenges such as droughts, floods, coastal erosion, and waste management. This initiative will also streamline access to international funding, empowering these cities to invest in climate resilience projects that pave the way for a sustainable future.

By becoming signatories of the Global Covenant of Mayors, these Oceania Pacific cities are making a steadfast commitment to protect their region, nurture their communities, and promote sustainable development. They stand at the forefront of a regional transformation, where resilience is not just a choice but an imperative in a world characterized by climate uncertainty.
