Blue-Green Development in Kiribati — Frontline Cities & Islands

Kiribati, one of the most vulnerable and impoverished countries in the Pacific region, is set to receive support from a new project aimed at building resilience to climate change and pandemic impacts. The Blue-Green Development in Kiribati project, funded by the German Government’s International Climate Initiative (IKI), aims to reduce dependence on external supplies and services by developing new models combining income generation, ecological health, coastal defence, improved food security and economic self-reliance.

Two urban local councils in South Tarawa, Kiribati, will develop and implement Climate and COVID Resilience Plans (CCRPs) to promote inclusive and sustainable community-based development that is aligned with national policies and programs. The project will also enhance self-reliance through improved sustainable livelihood opportunities and contribute towards improved food security and environmental protection.

The project is being led by the ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability in partnership with the Commonwealth Local Government Forum Pacific and Kiribati Local Government Association (KiLGA). The project demonstrates how enhanced participation and collaboration at all levels of government and society can accelerate sustainable development, particularly for Small Island Developing States.

The Frontline Cities and Islands program is dedicated to supporting coastal communities in their journey towards resilience and sustainability.
